Del Mar Recap for Friday (8-16-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at 5.5 furlongs on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a front runner at five panels, a stalker at five panels, and a last-to-first closer at eleven furlongs (rail at 30 feet).

Rafael Bejarano and Victor Espinoza both booted home a pair. Richard Baltas saddled two winners.

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $106,561, and one winning ticket paid $84,867.80. The 5 out of 6 consolation payoff was $230.00.

CTT & TOC Stakes Recap (8-16-19) - Winner: Siberian Iris ($16.20)

The pace was quick for eleven panels with Mirth and Lostintranzlation opening up early. The latter backed off, and Curlin’s Journey made the first move after the speed started coming back. The patient runners dominated in the lane with Ellis Park shipper Over Thinking grabbing a brief lead. Siberian Iris was seventh and last for at least the opening mile before mounting a nice rally in the stretch, and she got up in the final strides to win by neck. Over Thinking held the place over post time favorite Pantsonfire. Curlin’s Journey was best of the rest in 4th, and following her across the line were Mirth, Lostintranzlation, and Anna Pavlova. The final two finishers were well behind the rest.

Del Mar Recap for Saturday (8-17-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (5.5f, 6f, 8f). The winning turf course running styles were a front runner at five panels, a stalker at one mile, a front runner at nine furlongs, a closer at nine furlongs, and a last-to-first closer at 8.5 furlongs.

Hat trick for John Velazquez. Riding doubles for Florent GerouxFlavien Prat, and Joe TalamoRichard Baltas saddled four winners.

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $501.808, and nobody had all six winners. Five out of six paid $15,957,20. There was a mandatory payout on Saturday.

Green Flash Handicap (G3) Recap (8-17-19) - Mr Vargas ($8.40)

Mr Vargas was just two fleet for these. He broke running from the outside post and turned away favorites Eddie Haskell and Stormy Liberal to win by 2-1/4 lengths. Eddie Haskell was a 1/2 length better than Stormy Liberal for the runner-up spot. Undrafted and Calexman were next, and Shades of Victory trailed throughout.

Del Mar Handicap (G2) Recap (8-17-19) - Winner: Acclimate ($16.60)

Acclimate stole this eleven furlong turf affair. He just got out there and slowed things down. Ritzy A. P. made a run at him after a mile, but the front runner kicked clear again by 3-lengths and ended up scoring by a length when all was said and done. Oscar Dominguez rallied from last to land the runner-up spot, and Ritzy A. P. held 3rd by a neck over Blended Citizen. The Great Day and Itsinthepost were next, and Marckie’s Water trailed. The latter was the second betting choice and my top pick, but he never had his mind on running today. Pereira tried to coax him along but he was not having it.

Torrey Pines Stakes (G3) Recap (8-17-19) - Winner: Fighting Mad ($6.60)

This race was settled right out of the gate. Fighting Mad stretched out for Baffert, made a clear early lead though very reasonable splits, and scampered away in the lane to win by eight lengths. Hollywood Hills rallied from last to land the place as the longest shot on the board. Into Chocolate stalked and tried to make a run at the winner, and she lost 2nd late. Kim K was 4th, followed by High Regard, Sneaking Out, and Classic Fit.

Del Mar Oaks (G1) Recap (8-17-19) - Cambier Parc ($4.40)

This was an impressive win. Raymundos Secret, Keeper Ofthe Stars, Mucho Unusual, and Dogtag kept each other busy up front. Cambier Parc and Hidden Message bided their time in midpack and made their moves in the stretch. Cambier Parc produced a strong late kick and pulled clear to win by a length and a quarter for John Velazquez and Chad Brown. That was an impressive display of stretch speed. Hidden Message ran huge in her US bow to land the place from post 14. Lady Prancealot always puts in an honest late run and today was no exception. She went from 11th to 3rd at 15-1 odds. Keeper Ofthe Stars had the best finish of the early runners (4th), and was followed by Hard Legacy, Maxim Rate, Mucho Unusual, Raymundos Secret, Wildlife, Dogtag, Apache Princess, Out of Balance, and Sold It.

Pacific Classic (G1) Recap (8-17-19) - Winner: Higher Power ($21.20)

The Handicap Division is so wide open this year. McKinzie is the best of the west, but he shipped east and won the Whitney (G1). This was a race without a standout, and shippers Seeking the Soul and Quip were the two favorites. This race figured to favor forwardly placed runners and it did. Quip got out there and grabbed the early lead, and that is why I picked him on top. He looked like the main speed and seemed to have upside, but the distance was always the question, and he failed miserably. He was done after six panels. Higher Power tracked the pace from 2nd, took over when Quip faltered, and was never in danger for the final half-mile. He won like an odds-on favorite, not a 9-1 shot. Draft Pick stalked from the outside post and edged fellow stalker Mongolian Groom for the place, and it was another four lengths back to Tenfold in 4th. Campaign went from last to 5th, and War Story Seeking the Soul, Pavel, Quip, and For the Top trailed.

August 17 Claims: Race 4 - Swiss Minister ($20k, Andy Mathis).

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (8-18-19)

Fast main track and firm turf course. No front running winners on dirt. The winning turf course running styles were a closer at one mile and a front runner at one mile.

Hat trick for Victor Espinoza.

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $219,481, and nobody had all six winners. The 5 out of 6 payoff was $4,187.60. There will be a Pick 6 carryover of $117,253 when live racing resumes Wednesday, August 21, and the single ticket jackpot carryover stands at $25,126.

Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2) Recap (8-18-19) - Winner: Prince Earl ($21.60)

The paper race was tailor-made for closers, and the real race turned out that way as well. Every time What a View runs, you know the splits will be honest, and he was not the only speed horse entered. He went to the front as expected and received pressure from Bolo, Ohio, and El Picaro. This race set up for chalk Bowies Hero, but he had an uncomfortable trip. No problem for trainer Phil D’Amato. He also saddled returnee Prince Earl, and that one sat a nice ground saving trip behind the speed under Geovanni Franco, and he picked his way through the pack in the stretch to prevail by a bit less than a length. Sharp Samurai stalked from the outside post and just held the place over Grecian Fire. Ohio held 4th, and that brings us to Bowies Hero. The latter should have been no worse than 2nd, but he had nowhere to go in the stretch under Flavien Prat. He deserved much better than 5th. Majestic Eagle was last for much of the running and passed a few tired horses to finish 6th. Bolo, Double Touch, and El Picaro trailed.

August 18 Claims: Race 2 Baby Ice ($12.5k, Bob Hess Jr.), Holy Mosey ($12.5k, Steve Miyadi), Todos Santos ($12.5k, John F. Martin). Race 3 - Scrappy Deville ($16k, Eddie Truman), Vintage Hollywood ($16k, Andrew Lerner). Race 5 - Desert General ($10k, Jonathan Wong), Twirling Tiger ($10k, Jerry Wallace II).
