BC Classic 2023: Ranking the 3-Year-Olds

By Jarrod Horak

In this Breeders’ Cup Classic rankings article, I will go through all of the 3-year-olds and rank them in order of preference. Eight sophomores have been pre-entered in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic

I have been ranking the sophomore set all year long, beginning with my “Exceptional 11” Kentucky Derby contenders, and I kept following them throughout the summer in my Beyond the Crown series. The older handicap division lacks a clear leader and there is a very good chance that a 3-year-old will win the 2023 BC Classic.

Breeders' Cup 2023 Sire Uncle Mo

By Jarrod Horak

This is my final article in my five-part Breeders’ Cup sires series. I began my series with 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Curlin, and also covered 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Good Magic, 2017 BC Classic winner Gun Runner, and Triple Crown 2018 hero Justify. In this post, I will discuss one of the top Breeders’ Cup sires, Uncle Mo.

Click here for Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks, Tips and Insider Analysis

Race Record

Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie – Playa Maya, by Arch) only raced eight times but he definitely left a lasting impression. Mike Repole’s colt was outstanding as a juvenile with back-to-back Grade 1 wins in the 2010 Champagne and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Those efforts followed a jaw-dropping debut victory at Saratoga by 14 1/4 lengths. He remained unbeaten after winning the Timely Writer in his sophomore bow, and lost for the first time after setting the pace and finished a clear third in the Wood Memorial (G2). He entered the Kentucky Derby but was forced to scratch due to a liver ailment. He resurfaced more than four months later in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop at seven panels, and he stalked, led, and was nailed on the line by closer Caleb’s Posse. He got back on the beam in an easy front running score in the Kelso (G2) at one mile, and his career ended after an up the track finish in the 2011 BC Classic. He went 5-for-8 with a runner-up finish and a show finish, and banked more than $1.6 million.

Breeders' Cup 2023 Sire Justify

By Jarrod Horak

This is my fourth article in my five-part Breeders’ Cup sires series. So far, I have covered 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Curlin, 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Good Magic, and 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Gun Runner, and next up is Triple Crown 2018 hero Justify.

Click here for Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks, Tips and Insider Analysis

Early Race Record

Justify (Scat Daddy – Stage Magic, by Ghostzapper) burst onto the scene with a sensational extended sprint maiden romp at Santa Anita Park as the 1-2 favorite on February 18, 2018. He returned three weeks later and ran off the screen as the overwhelming betting choice in a flat mile allowance race. Bob Baffert’s very promising colt would make his stakes debut about a month later in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, and he set the pace as the chalk and kicked away from multiple graded winner Bolt d’Oro.

Breeders' Cup 2023 Sire Gun Runner

By Jarrod Horak

This is my third article in my five-part Breeders’ Cup sires series. I began my series with 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Curlin, and last time I covered 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Good Magic. In this post, I will discuss 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Gun Runner.

Click here for Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks, Tips and Insider Analysis

Race Record

Gun Runner (Candy Ride – Quiet Giant, by Giant’s Causeway) went 12-for-19 from September 2015 through January 2018, and earned a cool $15.9 million. He captured seven Grade 1 races including the prestigious Whitney, Breeders’ Cup Classic, and Pegasus World Cup.

Breeders’ Cup

Gun Runner’s first Breeders’ Cup appearance was in the 2016 Dirt Mile at Santa Anita.  Steve Asmussen’s colt stalked from the outside post, took a short lead, and held the place behind sharp late running winner Tamarkuz. He competed in the 2017 BC Classic at Del Mar, and he set a pressured pace under Florent Geroux and edged clear to score by 2 1/4 lengths over Bob Baffert runners Collected and West Coast.

Breeders' Cup 2023 Sire Good Magic

By Jarrod Horak

This is my second article in my five-part Breeders’ Cup sires series. I started my series with 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Curlin, and his son Good Magic is next in line.

Click here for Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks, Tips and Insider Analysis

Race Record

Good Magic (Curlin – Glinda the Good, by Hard Spun) raced nine times with three wins, three place finishes, and a show finish. He earned more than $2.9 million. He landed the place in his bow and occupied that same spot in the Grade 1 Champagne second time out. He graduated in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and began his sophomore campaign with a show finish in the Fountain of Youth (G2). Chad Brown’s colt bounced back with a victory in the Grade 2 Blue Grass at Keeneland. He stalked the pace and landed the place behind Justify in the Kentucky Derby (G1), and dueled with Justify and finished a close fourth in the Preakness (G1). He won the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth and retired after finishing up the track in the Travers (G1).

Breeders' Cup 2023: Top 3 Jockeys to Watch

By Jarrod Horak

The horses are clearly the main attraction, but Breeders’ Cup jockeys are a big part of the equation. In this report, I will take a look at three jockeys to keep an eye on for both Breeders’ Cup days at Santa Anita Park on November 3-4, 2023.

Click here for Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks, Tips and Insider Analysis

Breeders’ Cup Jockeys to Watch

Frankie Dettori is the first of three Breeders’ Cup jockeys to watch. He recently called off his retirement and is going to stay in California to ride after the 2023 Breeders’ Cup. He was third in the rider standings with 26 wins at the 2022-23 Santa Anita Park Winter Meet. The Italian rider captured 14 Breeders’ Cup races from 1994-2018 and his mounts earned over $25 million. The BC Turf has been his most successful race. He won that race five times including a victory aboard Enable (GB) in 2018. He booted home three winners in the BC Juvenile Turf and two in the BC Mile and BC Filly & Mare Turf. He guided home Wilko in the 2004 BC Juvenile, and took home the big prize in the 2008 BC Classic aboard Raven’s Pass.

Breeders' Cup 2023: Top 3 Trainers to Watch

By Jarrod Horak

The horses are obviously the star of the show, but Breeders’ Cup trainers are a big part of the story. In this report, I will take a look at three trainers to keep an eye on for both Breeders’ Cup days at Santa Anita Park on November 3-4, 2023.

Click here for Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks, Tips and Insider Analysis

Breeders’ Cup Trainers to Watch

Charles Appleby is the first name on the Breeders’ Cup trainers to watch list, and he is a remarkable 9-for-18 in the Breeders’ Cup. All nine won on turf. Six of his winners were bred in Ireland, and the other three were bred in Great Britain. He won the BC Juvenile Turf three times (Outstrip, Line of Duty, Modern Games). He saddled the BC Mile winner in 2021 and 2022 (Space Blues, Modern Games). In 2021 and 2022, he saddled BC Turf winners Yibir and Rebel’s Romance. He captured the BC Filly & Mare Turf in 2017 with Wuheida, and the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2022 with Mischief Magic. He figures to bring some live runners to Santa Anita for the 2023 Breeders’ Cup including Master of the Seas (BC Mile).
