Breeders' Cup 2023: Top 3 Jockeys to Watch

The horses are clearly the main attraction, but Breeders’ Cup jockeys are a big part of the equation. In this report, I will take a look at three jockeys to keep an eye on for both Breeders’ Cup days at Santa Anita Park on November 3-4, 2023.

Breeders’ Cup Jockeys to Watch
Frankie Dettori is the first of three Breeders’ Cup jockeys to watch. He recently called off his retirement and is going to stay in California to ride after the 2023 Breeders’ Cup. He was third in the rider standings with 26 wins at the 2022-23 Santa Anita Park Winter Meet. The Italian rider captured 14 Breeders’ Cup races from 1994-2018 and his mounts earned over $25 million. The BC Turf has been his most successful race. He won that race five times including a victory aboard Enable (GB) in 2018. He booted home three winners in the BC Juvenile Turf and two in the BC Mile and BC Filly & Mare Turf. He guided home Wilko in the 2004 BC Juvenile, and took home the big prize in the 2008 BC Classic aboard Raven’s Pass.

Santa Anita Park Stakes Race Report: December 28-29
Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (12-28-19)
Fast main track and good turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (6f, 8.5f). The winning turf course running styles were a front runner at one mile, a stalker at one mile, a midpack stalker at a mile and a quarter, a midpack stalker at a mile and an eighth, and a closer at one mile.
Four stakes wins for Mike Smith (two G1’s). Riding triple for Joel Rosario (pair of G2 wins).
The Rainbow 6 pool was $329,338, and multiple winning tickets paid $226.78 each. There will be a jackpot carryover of $75,392 when live racing resumes on Sunday, Dec. 29.
Lady of Shamrock Stakes Recap (12-28-19) - Winner: Brill ($9.00)
Pace was the key to victory in this race. Surface switcher Brill was able to get out there and control the tempo, and it was game over. She dictated terms under Mike Smith and was never seriously threatened. The winning margin was a shade under two lengths. Post time favorite Keeper Ofthe Stars stalked from the rail and was second best. Lucky Peridot chased and edged Sold It and Angel Alessandra for 3rd. Bodhicitta was next, followed by Mischiffie and Lakerball.
San Antonio Stakes (G2) Recap (12-28-19) - Winner: Gift Box ($4.40)
Another stakes race decided very early. Gift Box was favored to repeat, and he made short work of this field under Joel Rosario. He went straight to the front and widened throughout in an easy 3+ length victory. He loves a mile and a sixteenth races, and Santa Anita is his track. King Abner chased the winner throughout and was well clear of the rest in 2nd. Midcourt broke slow and rallied to finish a clear 3rd. Not a bad effort at all. Fight On was an even 4th, and was followed across the line by Gray Magician, Draft Pick, and Mugaritz.

Kentucky Derby 2019 Blog: Mike Smith to Ride Derby Favorite Omaha Beach at Churchill Downs
All of the Kentucky Derby 2019 points races have been run and now were are counting down to the first Saturday in May. Omaha Beach won the final prep at Oaklawn Park in the Arkansas Derby (G1) and is your likely favorite on the first Saturday in May.

Kentucky Derby 2019 Points Race Recaps
Lexington Stakes (G3) Recap (4-13-19) - Winner: Owendale ($27.40)
Owendale made a wide, sweeping move from off the pace and took down top honors by a bit less than two lengths. He was an early season Derby buzz horse after a fast allowance route win at Fair Grounds in January. He failed his first points test in the Risen Star (G2), and bounced back with a nice victory in this event. He picked up 20 Derby points but that is not nearly enough to make the field. He figures to target the Preakness Stakes (G1) and clearly has some talent. The Lexington Stakes (G3) was basically a win and you’re in for Anothertwsitafate, and he fell a length and three-quarters short in a solid place finish. In his start prior to the Lexington, he switched to dirt, stalked the pace, and surged in the lane to miss by a neck in the Sunland Derby (G3). In those two races, he was a bit uncomfortable chasing the pace in and amongst horses, but he fought hard throughout both times despite less than ideal circumstances. I think he is best setting the pace or stalking outside and in the clear, and he is currently on the outside looking in at #23 on the Derby points list. Earlier this winter, he was excellent in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields on all-weather footing, and that victory earned him an automatic berth in the Preakness Stakes (G1). The $360k son of Scat Daddy needs a few defections to get into the Derby, and the best thing for him might be missing that race and waiting for the Preakness. The Derby would be his third start in six weeks. If he waits for the Preakness, he would have five weeks between races, and he is talented enough to make some noise in Baltimore. Sueno was also on the points bubble and needed a win here, but all he could manage was a clear place finish. The Keith Desormeaux trainee is consistent but a cut or two below the top 3-year-olds. Knicks Go attended the pace and finished 4th, and was followed by Shang, Roiland, Harvey Wallbanger, Zenden, Hawaiian Noises, and Chase the Ghost.

Kentucky Derby 2019 Points Race Recap: Derby Favorite Omaha Beach Wins Arkansas Derby
Mud-loving Omaha Beach got the jump on Improbable and won the last big 100 point Kentucky Derby 2019 prep race by a length. That is the second time that he shipped to Oaklawn Park and took down a Bob Baffert runner. Last month, he nipped Game Winner by a nose in the second division of the Rebel Stakes (G2).

Santa Anita Track Bias Report 2016 (Nov 3-6)
Closing week at Santa Anita was also Breeders' Cup week. Mike Smith capped off an outstanding Breeders' Cup with a very smart victory aboard Arrogate
in the BC Classic. He was much the best over California Chrome and it
looks as though the torch has been passed in the Handicap Division.

Fast main track and firm turf course at Santa Anita Park. Only one wire-to-wire winner on dirt (6.5f). The winning turf course running styles were a patient runner down the hill, a downhill stalker, and a stalker at one mile (rail at 30 feet).
Kent Desormeaux booted home a pair. Training doubles for Phil D’Amato, Peter Miller, and Doug O’Neill.

Early/pressing types dominated on the fast main track with six of the races won by front runners or duelers.
No riding or training doubles on Friday.
Saturday Santa Anita Park Recap: June 25
Three wire-to-wire winners on the fast main track (6f, 5f, 6f).
Rafael Bejarano rode three winners and Mike Smith booted home a pair. Jerry Hollendorfer saddled three winners and Mike Smith rode two. Bob Baffert saddled two winners.

Last week at Santa Anita Park (June 16-19)
Last week at Santa Anita, we said goodbye to turf racing. The new turn course will be revealed before the start of the Breeders' Cup meet in the fall. Rafael Bejarano and Flavien Prat continue to battle for leading rider. Advantage Bejarano since turf racing is finished.

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three wire-to-wire winner on dirt (5f, 5f, 6f). The winning turf course running styles were a patient runner at 9f and two flat mile stalkers (rail at 10 feet).
Phil D’Amato and Peter Miller (turf) both saddled two winners.

Fast main track and firm turf course. Only one wire-to-wire winner on dirt (6f). The winning turf course running styles were a patient runner at a flat mile and two stalkers at one mile (rail at 20 feet).

Last Week at Santa Anita Park (March 3-6)
A hat trick and a pair of riding doubles gave Rafael Bejarano a commanding lead in the rider standings.
Thursday Santa Anita Park Recap: March 3
Fast main track and firm turf course. Only one wire-to-wire winner on dirt (one mile). A downhill stalker and a prominent throughout type at ten furlongs made up the two turf winners (rail at 20 feet).
No riding/training doubles on Thursday.
Friday Santa Anita Park Recap: March 4
Fast main track and firm turf course. Two wire-to-wire winners on dirt (8f, 6.5f). Two wire jobs and a patient runner made up the three flat mile turf winners (rail at 30 feet).
Hat trick for leading rider Rafael Bejarano. Agapito Delgadillo booted home a pair.
Saturday Santa Anita Park Recap: March 5
Fast main track and firm turf course. One wire-to-wire winner on dirt (Songbird – 8.5f). A downhill stalker, a flat mile stalker, and a flat mile wire job made up the three turf winners (rail at 10 feet).
