Fair Grounds Oaks 2026 Analysis (3-21-26)

The Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks is one of the most important final stepping-stone races on the road to the Kentucky Oaks. Run at 1 1/16 miles at Fair Grounds Race Course on Louisiana Derby Day, the race brings together a competitive group of three-year-old fillies chasing valuable Kentucky Oaks qualifying points.

Using the past performances from Today’s Racing Digest, I’ll break down the field, evaluate the pace scenario, and rank the contenders.

Meet the Field

The Fair Grounds Oaks drew a compact but competitive group of seven fillies. Several arrive from key prep races while others attempt to prove they belong at the graded stakes level.

1. Miss Metoyer

This filly improved dramatically when winning by 13 lengths at Delta Downs last time with a 129 final time rating. However, all of her victories have come at Delta Downs, and stepping up in class while stretching out against graded stakes company is a major challenge.

She could impact the early pace from the rail, but it’s difficult to project her carrying that speed against this caliber of competition.

2. Newtown Pike

This filly has steadily improved for trainer Lindsay Schultz, with final time ratings climbing from 101 to 120 and then 138 in the Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn.

While the upward trajectory is encouraging, the strength of that Oaklawn prep is questionable. Several runners from the race have yet to return with strong follow-up performances.

Road to Kentucky Oaks Report (1-20-26)

The Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds was the latest Kentucky Oaks 2026 prep race and Taken by the Wind stole the candy on the front end. A baker’s dozen Oaks points races have been run so far, and in this report, I will recap the Silverbulletday, update the points standings, and share my top five Oaks fillies.

I cover all of the Kentucky Oaks points race on my Runaway Horse YouTube channel, and through the first 13 points races, my top choices have 5 wins, 3 runner-up finishes, and 4 show finishes. There are no Oaks Points races this week, and we are back on the Oaks trail on Jan. 31 with the Forward Gal and Martha Washington.

Kentucky Oaks 2026 Points Race Recaps

Silverbulletday at Fair Grounds (1-17-26): Nobody seemed to want the early lead and Taken by the Wind was a length to the good after the opening quarter. She was walking on the front end and Luv Your Neighbor chased from second and Atropa tracked the pace from the inside post. Due to the below par fractions, Taken by the Wind ($10.80) had enough left to hold off Luv Your Neighbor and prevailed by a neck, and it was another neck back to clear show finisher Atropa. Pashmina (4th), Dancin in Old Town (5th), and White Smoke (6th) also ran. Brian Hernandez, Jr. rode the winner for Ken McPeek. Fractions: 25.69, 50.24, 1:14.49, 1:39.22, 1:43.58.

Risen Star Stakes 2024 Analysis

The road to Kentucky Derby 2024 continues at Fair Grounds on Saturday, February 17, and I have included Risen Star Stakes 2024 picks below. The Grade 2 event for 3-year-olds has a $400,000 purse and the twelve entrants will be journeying 1 1/18 miles on the main track. The Risen Star is the 14th race on Feb. 17 and the top five finishers will earn Kentucky Derby points (50-25-15-10-5). 

Risen Star Stakes 2024 Picks & Final Time Ratings

Sierra Leone stalked slow fractions and finished nicely to win his flat mile bow at Aqueduct. He caught a wet, speed favoring surface in the Grade 2 Remsen, and he rallied from last to take a short lead, but front runner Dornoch came back and prevailed by a nose. Chad Brown’s $2.3 million Gun Runner colt adds blinkers and shows eight works at Payson Park for this. Tyler Gaffalione is his new rider and he will try to get involved from off the pace.
