Belmont Stakes 2026 Analysis (6-6-26)

The final jewel of the Triple Crown arrives at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, June 6, as a talented field of nine three-year-olds competes in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes. With a $2 million purse on the line and a distance of 1¼ miles to conquer, this year’s Belmont shapes up as a fascinating tactical battle where pace and trip could determine the winner.

A Different Race Than the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby featured a fast pace that completely collapsed, setting the stage for deep closers. That scenario allowed Golden Tempo to rally from last place and score a upset at 23-1 odds.

The Belmont Stakes appears much different.

There is no clear speed demon in this field, and the pace is expected to be moderate. Horses with tactical speed—those capable of sitting just behind the leaders—could have a significant advantage. Deep closers may find themselves with too much ground to make up in the stretch.

Main Contenders

Chief Wallabee enters the Belmont after finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby, a performance that may have been better than it appears on paper.

The Bill Mott trainee encountered some traffic issues and never enjoyed a completely clean trip at Churchill Downs. Despite those challenges, he remained competitive throughout and finished respectably against the best three-year-olds in the country.

Several factors make him particularly appealing in the Belmont:

• Tactical speed that should allow him to secure ideal positioning early.
• A favorable inside draw in post three.
• Continued improvement since adding blinkers.
• Strong connections with trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado.
• A focused training schedule at Saratoga specifically targeting this race.

Mott and Alvarado successfully executed a similar Belmont campaign last year, and the team appears to have followed a proven blueprint once again.

Kentucky Derby 2026 Analysis

The Grade 1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs headlines Saturday’s card as Race 12, featuring a $5 million purse for three-year-olds going 1 1/4 miles on the main track. With a full field of contenders and a projected honest pace, this year’s Derby shapes up as a wide-open betting race.

For this analysis, I’m using the Complete Digest Kentucky Derby edition, focusing on proprietary performance ratings like Fire Number, CPR, Fast Figs, and Final Time Ratings to separate contenders from pretenders.

Top Tier Contenders

• #1 Renegade (4-1) – A proven Grade 1 winner with a strong closing kick. He’ll need racing luck from the rail but has the pedigree and pace setup to thrive late.
• #6 Commandment – Ultra-consistent with four straight wins including the Florida Derby. Tactical speed gives him trip versatility.
• #8 So Happy – Santa Anita Derby winner with top-tier CPR and Fast Fig ratings. Must prove California form translates.
• #18 Further Ado – Blue Grass Stakes winner with elite projected Fire Number (106) and top Final Time Rating (156).

Kentucky Derby 2026 Report (4-19-26)

The horses are starting to arrive at Churchill Downs as we inch closer to Kentucky Derby. In this report, I will take a look at the latest news, update the points standings, and share my exceptional eleven Derby contenders.

Ottinho dropped out of the Derby field yesterday and that allowed Chief Wallabee to jump into the body of the race. Grittiness was removed from Derby consideration on Saturday as well.

On Sunday, Nearly and Bravaro were dropped from consideration. The former will go to Centennial Farms for some rest and relaxation after training unsatisfactorily in recent weeks. Bravaro is targeting the Mike Lee Stakes for New York-bred 3-year-olds at Saratoga on June 3.

Chip Honcho, 21st on the points list, breezed 5f in 59.80 (6/39) at CD on April 18. He galloped out 6f in 1:12.72 and 7f in 1:25.73. He worked in company with last-out New Orleans Classic (G2) runner-up Corporate Power. Steve Asmussen’s colt has early-pressing speed and could play a big pace role if he gets into the Derby field.

Intrepido, currently 22nd on the points list, worked a half-mile in 47.20 (2/97) at Santa Anita on April 19. Hector Berrios will ride if he makes the 20-horse field.

Road to Kentucky Derby 2026 Report (4-13-26)

The Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland was the final Kentucky Derby 2026 prep race and 36-1 longshot Trendsetter pulled off the upset but does not have enough points to run in the Derby. In this report, I will recap the Lexington, update the points standings, and share my exceptional eleven Derby contenders.

I covered all of the Kentucky Derby 2026 points races on my Runaway Horse video channel, and through 37 points races, my top choices had 13 wins, 4 runner-up finishes, and 7 show finishes.

Kentucky Derby 2026 Points Race Recaps

Grade 3 Lexington at Keeneland (4-11-26): My top choice Corona de Oro set the pace from the inside post and The Hell We Did chased from second. Trendsetter ($66.68) stalked from midpack and went past the two aforementioned early runners to win by 2 1/4 lengths (85 BSF). The Hell We Did finished second and Corona de Oro was 4 lengths in front of I Did I Did (4th). Beaten favorite Confessional was 5th and Ezum (6th), Mister T (7th), Ramblin (8th), and Exhibition Only (9th) also ran. Kazushi Kimura rode the winner for Ben Colebrook and the winner picked up 20 Kentucky Derby points. He does not have enough points to run in the Derby and this was probably more of a Preakness prep. Fractions: 23.68, 47.92, 1:12.12, 1:37.71, 1:44.51.
