Kentucky Derby 2019 Contender Spinoff Finishes 2nd in Louisiana Derby

Spinoff, my first Kentucky Derby 2019 hopeful from my Under the Radar Derby contender video series, finished 2nd in the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds on Saturday, March 23. He picked up 40 Kentucky Derby points for trainer Todd Pletcher and most likely has enough points to run on the first Saturday in May. He was ranked #11 on my Kentucky Derby "Exceptional Eleven" list heading into the LA Derby, and he did more than enough to remain on the list with his clear place finish on Saturday.

Spinoff will return to his South Florida base to begin preparations for the Kentucky Derby. We have been following this one closely at The Runaway Horse since he finished 3rd in the Saratoga Special at Saratoga Race Course last summer. We profiled him after he ran off the screen in his 3-year-old bow at Tampa Bay Downs in February, and it was nice to see him run well in his first points race try on Saturday.
