Kentucky Derby 2025 Points Race Recaps
Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby (4-5-25): This race lived up to top billing. Westwood, a 44-1 maiden for John Shirreffs, was aggressively handled from post 2 and was in front after a quarter. Citizen Bull wanted the lead but could not get it under Martin Garcia, and he eased out to chase Westwood. Journalism was patiently handled inside, Barnes was keen to go, and Baeza was racing in the clear from the outside post. Westwood and Citizen Bull continued to mix it up with five furlongs to go, and Baeza made a wide move and joined the chase. Citizen Bull was clear after six furlongs and Baeza worked his way up to second. Westwood was third, Barnes was next, and Journalism saved ground in last place. Baeza caught Citizen Bull in the stretch and was the new target, and Journalism worked his way off the rail and was on the move, and he lengthened stride, got to the front late, and scored by 3/4ths of a length. Baeza ran his heart out and was 8 1/2 lengths in front of Westwood. Citizen Bull was out of gas and finished a half-length behind the maiden, and it was another 10 lengths back to Barnes. Umberto Rispoli rode Journalism for Michael McCarthy, and he is 4-for-4 around two turns and heads to Louisville as the clear Kentucky Derby favorite. Fractions: 22.25, 47.14, 1:11.42, 1:37.07, 1:49.56.

Maker’s Mark Mile Analysis
Integration won the Grade 3 Virginia Derby and Grade 2 Hill Prince in 2023. He started 2024 with a 5th place finish in the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1), and followed that up with a show finish in this race. He was fourth in the Turf Classic (G1), first in the Million Preview, second in the Arlington Million (G1), and first in the Grade 2 Red Smith. Last time, he did all of the pace dirty work and missed by a neck in the Grade 1 Pegasus Turf on Jan. 25. He cuts back in distance and should save ground behind the speed under Frankie Dettori.
Carl Spackler is a 6-time stakes winner for Chad Brown. He is 4-for-5 at Saratoga and is probably gearing up for multiple starts at that venue. He won a pair go Grade 1 races last year including the Turf Mile at Keeneland last fall, and he was 6th of 10 when last seen in the BC Mile (G1) last time. Flavien Prat takes the call and the early-pressing win type should be in the hunt throughout.

The Grade 1, $650,000 Madison Stakes is the 8th race at Keeneland on Tuesday, April 8. Eight fillies and mares were entered in this event at seven furlongs on the main track, and Scylla is the morning line favorite.
Madison Analysis
Emery is 5-for-8 overall with two runner-up finishes, and she is 2-for-2 at Keeneland and likes this distance (4 2-2-0). I like her early-pressing versatility and her new rider Luan Machado wins races with Brad Cox.
Mystic Lake is 4-for-5 with a runner-up finish at seven panels. The early-pressing filly drew a good post and this race is lacking front end speed.

My top ranked Derby contender Sovereignty returned from a layoff and went last-to-first in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, and Journalism smartly ran down race favorite Barnes in a fast renewal of the San Felipe. In this report, I will recap the Gotham, Fountain of Youth, and San Felipe, update the Derby points standings, and share my latest exceptional 11 Derby contenders.

In other Derby news, Bullard shipped from California to Arkansas and spiked a temperature and was forced to scratch out of the Rebel Stakes (G2) on Feb. 23. Last year’s Bob Hope (G3) hero needs to recover quickly if he has any hope of making the Derby. He has zero Derby points and has yet to compete in a route race. Due to this setback, he drops off my Derby list to make room for Coal Battle.
